Increase your chances of passing the G2 road test by learning what exactly the examiners are looking for in the G2 road test. Learn the most common critical errors so you can easily avoid them in your actual road test.
We know taking a road test can be very stressful. It’s important to remember to remain calm and focused during your test and to ensure you are arriving prepared for your test. Complete all our practice courses and pass your actual G2 road test the first time.
The G2 driving test is not designed to trick you and the DriveTest examiner will not ask you to do anything illegal or unsafe.
Preparation can help you learn what you need to know to operate a vehicle safely on the road. Once you have the knowledge that you need for the G2 license, you are ready to begin the process of becoming a skillful driver.
The DriveTest examiner will only give you directions on what to do. As a road test applicant, it is your responsibility to complete the requested action when it is safe to do so. This driving test criterion is the uniform standard by which the driving skills of all G2 driver’s license applicants are evaluated.
Knowing what to expect on your G2 road test will help you better prepare for the road test and will increase the chance you will pass the road test the first time. Remember, a G2 road test is just a DriveTest examiner observing your driving on a route they determine for you. The information provided in this course will help you earn what a DriveTest examiner is looking for in a G2 road test in Ontario. The sections match the road test checklist used by a DriveTest examiner during a G2 road test.
Driving errors that are committed during a G2 road test result in points against you and are scored on a checklist used by your examiner.
Before the G2 road test starts, the DriveTest examiner will explain how he or she will provide directions during the road test.
Remember, the DriveTest examiner cannot help you during your G2 road test. The examiner is there to observe your driving. Make sure this is clear and that you ask any questions BEFORE the road test starts.
At the end of the G2 road test, the DriveTest examiner will give you a copy of the G2 road test checklist, provide you with a summary, and explain areas where points were assigned.

Yes, I want to pass my G2 road testMake sure you arrive at least 30 minutes early for your G2 road test with the vehicle that you are going to use for the road test. The MTO or DriveTest doesn’t provide a vehicle for the test. Road tests take place all year round and in any weather conditions unless canceled due to extreme weather conditions. If the weather is bad, check the Service Disruptions page on the day of your test for updates.
After you park your vehicle, go inside the DriveTest Centre to check-in. You can either use a self-serve kiosk for check-in or talk to a customer service agent. After you check in, go back to your vehicle and wait for your driving examiner. Make sure your vehicle is in good working order and you have enough gas in the vehicle to take your G2 road test.
You are required to turn off any in-vehicle recording devices or they should not be facing the passenger area. The DriveTest examiner could declare your test “out of order” if you refuse to follow this requirement and you will also lose 50% of your road test fee and will have to pay the outstanding 50% to schedule your next road test. Only you and the driving examiner are allowed in the vehicle during the road test. Pets are not allowed and passengers will have to wait in designated areas. Make sure you have your glasses or contact lenses if you need to wear them to drive. You also need to bring your current driver’s license.
Please note that the driving examiners are not there to coach you or train you so if you do have any questions, ask them before your road test. The job of the driving examiner is to evaluate your driving skills according to set criteria and complete a form/scoresheet. The driving examiner may stop or refuse to start your G2 test if:

The G2 road test consists of 7 sections. The G2 road test (also called the G1 exit road test) was designed by the Ministry of Transportation (MTO) to check that you have the basic skills necessary to drive safely. Here are the 7 sections:
The G2 road test is also called the “city test” or “G1 exit road test” and usually takes about 20 minutes to complete. If you pass your road test, you will be granted a Class G2 driver’s license.
Fortunately, the G2 road test is not very expensive. The G1 license package already includes the fee to take your G2 road test ($159.75). When you pass your G2 road test, you will need to pay a $90 licensing fee. If you do not pass the G2 test, the fee to re-take the road test is $53.75.
There is no one answer to this question. There are minor mistakes and critical mistakes. One critical mistake such as speeding, or failing to stop at red lights or stop signs could cause automatic failure.
You are allowed to retake the G2 road test if your G2 license is still valid. However, if your G1 license expires, you will have to start all over again. We strongly recommend that you take some professional driving lessons and G2 road tests such as Trubicars G2 road tests before your actual road test.
After passing your G2 road test, you get to enjoy more freedom but there are still many conditions that you must follow to keep your G2 license. You still must:
For drivers under the age of 19, there are additional restrictions:
